Bach Dang Street

Every great port town has its waterfront, and Bach Dang Street is where Hoi An meets the Thu Bon River in the most spectacular way imaginable. This riverside promenade is the town's living room — where locals gather at dawn for tai chi, travelers linger over coffee watching boats glide past, and the most magical sunsets in central Vietnam paint the sky every evening. The name Bach Dang carries deep meaning in Vietnamese history. It refers to the Bach Dang River in the north, where Vietnamese forces defeated Chinese and Mongol invaders in three separate battles spanning nearly a thousand years. Naming this street after those victories was a deliberate act of national pride. But this particular stretch of riverfront is about trade, not war. The historic Bach Dang Wharf was constructed in 1872 during the French colonial period, though boats had been docking along these banks for centuries before that. In Hoi An's heyday, this waterfront would have been magnificent chaos — merchant junks packed stern to bow, crews hauling silk and ceramics onto the docks, and traders from a dozen countries haggling in as many languages.
