Step off the Japanese Covered Bridge heading west, and you are on what might be the most historically layered street in Hoi An. Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street was once the heart of the Japanese merchant quarter, and even though the last Japanese trader left in the 1630s when the Tokugawa shogunate sealed Japan's borders, their architectural fingerprints are everywhere you look. The street takes its modern name from Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, a revolutionary heroine who fought French colonialism in the 1930s and 1940s. But the buildings predate that struggle by centuries. During the 16th and early 17th centuries, Japanese merchants built homes, warehouses, and workshops here in a style that blended Japanese construction with Vietnamese and Chinese elements — a fusion that was entirely new and entirely Hoi An. The most remarkable survivor is the Phung Hung Old House at number 4, just steps from the bridge. Over 240 years old and home to eight generations of the same family, this two-story wooden house is an architectural love letter to three cultures. The Japanese influence shows in distinctive boat-shaped ceiling beams — curved timbers evoking the hulls of trading vessels. Chinese elements appear in the balcony design. And...
