This might be the most peaceful place in all of Hoi An, and in a town already known for its charm, that is really saying something. Welcome to Reaching Out Teahouse, at 131 Tran Phu Street, where silence is not just appreciated, it is the entire point. Reaching Out is a social enterprise founded by Nguyen Minh Phuoc, who grew up with a physical disability in rural Quang Nam Province. After years of experiencing the barriers that people with disabilities face in Vietnam, he established Reaching Out in 2000 as a workshop, and later expanded into this beautiful teahouse. Every member of the staff here is hearing or speech impaired, and the experience is designed around that reality in the most elegant way imaginable. When you sit down, you will not find a waiter hovering for your order. Instead, there are small wooden blocks on your table, each carved with the name of a drink or snack. You simply place the blocks that represent what you want on a small tray, and a staff member will come collect them with a warm smile.
