Chuc Thanh Pagoda was founded in 1454, which means this sacred ground was already ancient when the Japanese Bridge was built, before the Chinese assembly halls existed, before Hoi An was even known as a major trading port. The pagoda was established by a Chinese Buddhist monk named Minh Hai, who belonged to the thirty-fourth generation of the Linji school of Chan Buddhism. He traveled from China across the sea, seeking a place to plant the seeds of Buddhist teaching in Vietnamese soil. He found this quiet hillside in what is now Tan An Ward, about two kilometers from the bustle of the Ancient Town, and he knew it was right.
