Step through this ornate triple-arched gateway and you are about to enter the most spectacular building in Hoi An. The Fujian Assembly Hall, Hoi Quan Phuc Kien, is not just the largest assembly hall in town. It is a place so rich with color, smoke, and devotion that you could spend an hour here and still miss half of what it offers. Built in the 1690s at 46 Tran Phu Street by immigrants from Fujian Province in southeastern China, this complex started as a simple meeting place where Hokkien merchants could gather, do business, settle disputes, and celebrate festivals far from home. Over the centuries it expanded into the magnificent temple you see today, with layer upon layer of courtyards, altars, gardens, and ceremonial halls. The Fujian community was the largest of Hoi An's five Chinese congregations. They controlled much of the maritime trade, and their assembly hall reflects that wealth. But the heart of this place is not commerce. It is faith. Walk deeper and you'll reach the main temple, dedicated to Thien Hau, the Heavenly Goddess, protector of sailors and fishermen.
